Cleaning Up My “To Read” List on Goodreads

A while back, I used to do monthly Down the TBR posts, but I’ve been remiss in posting on my blog and maintaining my TBR lately. So much so that my TBR is heading back to the 500s range again.

Now that I have a better understanding of my current preferences, I think it’s time to look back at my ever-growing TBR to restructure it into something more reasonable and representative of my interests.

I’ll be doing these lists in big chunks so that I can get this done more quickly. That way, I won’t have as much time to keep adding books to my TBR. The longer I leave it alone, the longer it gets ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Starting From the Beginning

I’m starting from the top of the list! I edited my TBR last year but I bet I’ll still be running across a few early to mid-2010 books I probably can’t relate to anymore.

I’m doing large picture collages of the books on my TBR instead of doing them one by one. Book covers that are in greyscale mean I have removed them from the TBR list. Book covers in color are the books that I will be keeping.

About the Books I’m Keeping:

Even though I’m not much of a non-fiction reader, I’ve kept a couple of biographies and memoirs because I’ve discovered that they can be just as interesting as any fictional work. I’ve read the entire TOG series, but have yet to read the collection of novellas, so that means The Assassin’s Blade stays. The Kiss of Deception and Grave Mercy stay because some older YA fantasies still have a charm and I want to see if these ones do as well.

About the Books I’m Removing:

I know I won’t really get to the middle-grade reads on my list unless I feel like my life won’t be complete without them. I tried Catch-22 some time ago but I couldn’t seem to focus or get through it. The other books I’ve chosen to remove just don’t seem to interest me any longer. I’m kinda sad about Unearthly, but my angel phase is most definitely over ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ

About the Books I’m Keeping:

I say I love historical fiction, but I rarely read them. Ruta Sepetys seems to be highly regarded for that particular genre. At some point, I want to try one of her books. I was going to remove Love & Gelato until I saw the Netflix trailer for its film adaptation. Now I have to see what it’s about and why it’s received fairly positive reviews! I’m attracted to the cover of A Thousand Pieces of You. I want the book to be as pretty as the cover. The second book is removed from my TBR because I’m not sure I’ll actually like the first one. I’m only keeping The Sun is Also A Star because I own the eBook version of it. And lastly, Outlander must stay because I love the show and I see it as a challenge I must conquer.

About the Books I’m Removing:

Most of the books I will be getting rid of are books that no longer fit my reading preferences. Nevernight seemed like it might be interesting but as time passes, I often forget about it. I can only assume that means it’s not really a book I need to read. Glass Sword has been on my TBR since I “temporarily” DNF’d back in 2017. After all this time, I’ve never had the urge to try it again. It is finally time for it to go.

I’m a tiny bit sad about some of the books I’ve chosen to let go of, but I gotta be real with myself. There’s only so much time in the day, in the month, in the year, that I have to read these books. I HAVE to be pickier about the books I choose to spend my time trying to read. TLDR; I gotta be more realistic.

My goal is to drop my TBR down to about 200 books! It’s kind of freeing to be so cutthroat with my reading list. I feel like I can actually get things done if the TBR didn’t feel so impossibly long. So, I’m hoping this will encourage a more streamlined list and a renewed interest in the books I’d like to read in the future.

Thanks so much for stopping by. Until next time! ๐Ÿ’–

    1. Yeah, the cover and premise really drew me in when it was first released. But now, I just don’t see it as a must-read. Some of the GR reviews also threw me off. I might try some of Kristoff’s other book, though: Empire of the Vampire. I heard that one was pretty good.

  1. Ah this is such a great post, I really should do this. I think I have over 600 books on my goodreads tbr shelf and… that’s way too much ahahah. Glad you’re keeping Love & Gelato, I’m so curious about this one!! ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. I read just the first chapter of Love & Gelato and found myself reeled in pretty quickly. I wasn’t in the mood just yet, but I think it’ll be a really cute book! I heard the movie wasn’t that great, so I’m looking forward to the book even more now haha
