Down the TBR Hole is a weekly book meme created by the wonderful Lia @ Lost in a Story that attempts to organize our ridiculously long Goodreads TBR list by choosing either to keep or eliminate the books we’ve kept on there for YEARS.
I think this is a wonderful opportunity to take a closer look at our “to-read” shelf and possibly reduce the stress we might have in thinking that we HAVE to read every single book on our TBR.
Let’s face it. Our interests change. Books we’ve put on our TBR list years ago may not interest us as much now as they did back then. So, I think it’s time to really take a look at that list and see if all those books are actually what we’d like to read in our spare time.
According to my Goodreads, I have 203 books (and counting) on my TBR. There are some books that I haven’t even added yet, which will surely make that number go WAAAAY up. I think it’s time to clean house.
So How Does This Work?
- Go to your Goodreads “to-read” shelf.
- Order on ascending date added.
- Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
- Read the synopses of the books
- Decide: keep it or should it go?
*Side Note: If you are going to repeat this process every week, make sure to keep track of where you ended. Start from the bottom and work your way up!
The Books:
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone | J.K. Rowling
When I was younger, I wasn’t allowed to read the HP series due to religious reasons. However, now that I’m older and I can determine the appropriateness of a book for myself, I’ve decided the HP series is no threat to me or my religion. Plus, I’ve always been interested in the HP phenomena. Therefore the judgement is:
Keep
A Game of Thrones (or A Song of Fire and Ice) | George R.R. Martin
I’m really behind on the TV show. I think I’m only on season 2 (I haven’t even watched the Red Wedding, yet). And I haven’t really made the effort to continue. I’m still interested in the show, but I think that’s where my interest really ends. For now, the judgement for this book/this series is:
Go
Opal (Book 3 of the Lux series) | Jennifer L. Armentrout
I read the first book about three years ago but I can’t remember reading the second book. So, I’m not sure if I was ever interested in continuing the series. The judgement for this one is:
Go
Intertwined | Gena Showalter
Honestly, I don’t remember putting this one on my TBR. And I’ve never heard of the author. But I re-read the synopsis and the premise still seems prertty interesting to me. There are certain elements mentioned that I appreciate, and so the judgement for this one is:
Keep
The Dark Divine | Bree Despain
Oh would you look at that? Another book I have no idea when I placed on my TBR? I think I put this one on my to-read shelf about 4 to 6 years ago, but I’m not sure why. The cover’s pretty… After re-reading the synopsis I’ll say I’m intrigued. But then I read a couple of my friends’ reviews and now I’m not so sure if I should go forward with this one…. Ah what the heck. I’ll take a chance on it. The judgement is:
Azia,
Do you only read YA books? I haven’t heard of some of the books you’ve read, but you sure peaked my curiosity. I have read plenty of YA books and I am also into crime fiction, James Patterson is my favorite, and nonfiction too. I have a Goodreads account but I rarely use it. I have a tablet with some free samples and free books on it and am in the process of deciding whether to buy the books I have sampled for the tablet or buy the physical copies from Barnes and Noble. The tablet is alright to read from, but I also like having physical copies too. I’m glad we share this love of reading.

Most of what I read are YAs, but occasionally I like to read adult genre fiction, like mystery/thriller, crime, and fantasy! However, all of my reviews so far (except Captive Prince) have been YA books 🙂 I really like James Patterson, too! But I also like Vince Flynn and John Grisham. I’ve had a Goodreads account for a few years but I started using it much more frequently this past summer.
I went through an eBook phase but now I’m only trying to buy hard copies to enhance my library at home. But I’d recommend getting the physical copies only if you’re more than sure that you want the book! Some of my favorite series are on my Nook but I now wish I had bought the physical copies! I only use my tablet now for when I’m trying to travel light 🙂
I’m glad we share a love for reading as well! I love talking with my fellow bookworms 😀

Yes, I use my tablet from time to time as well. I got it as a Christmas present two years ago. When I don’t have wifi access, I at least have some books up there to read.

Oh that’s nice 😀 Tablets are very useful to have around. Great travel buddies. And I make sure to always have mine when I have an appt. somewhere LOL

A Song of Ice and Fire is huge! Like 800 pages or something.. I never read it but I don’t really like the tv show either.

Yeah, I’ve seen some ppl reading the book and even though I’ve read books that size, it’s still a little intimidating 0_o. I think I’ll just stick with the TV show for now, even though I’m not as involved with it as I thought I’d be There’s just some parts of the show that don’t interest me, tbh. I think that’s why I’m still on season 2 LOL

I never got past episode 1 because I didn’t really like it, so I don’t think I’ll ever read the books..

Oh wow lol. Yeah, I think GoT is an acquired taste! I know a lot of friends of mine who can’t stand the show, so you’re not alone 😀 I’m gonna try watching it this winter, but I know it’s going to take me a while

It’s not that I can’t stand it but I just don’t like it very much.

Ooooh okay. I get it 🙂 I was the same way with Arrow. All my friends and family LOVED the show but I just… didn’t like it. Could barely get past the first episode

I never watched Arrow, but Oliver (the main character) was in The Flash once or twice and I didn’t like him.. I love The Flash though 🙂

This is a great idea and something I should probably start doing soon, too, considering the fact that my TBR pile keeps growing and growing even though I’m not interested in many of the books on there. I’m so glad you’ve decided to read the Harry Potter series eventually – it’s phenomenal (I’m sure you already know this, though), and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it when you do. 🙂

I thoughts so, too! I’m glad I’m finally taking a closer look at my TBR. There’s just some books on there that shouldn’t be. I think everyone should take the time to comb through their list at least once, b/c as you said, there’s probably a lot of books on there that don’t interest us anymore! And I can’t wait to read the HP series and share my opinions on it! I’d like to be a legit Potterhead by the end of the series LOL. Thanks for commenting! 🙂 ❤

This is an AWESOME meme! My first time seeing it, but I’m definitely participating. I have, um, over 600 books on my GoodReads TBR list. *blush*

Isn’t it!? And whoah 0_o…That’s a lot of books LOL. But don’t worry, I’m sure there are a LOT of bookworms out there who have the same number or even more on the list haha! XD I really do hope you participate in the meme. Can’t wait to see which books you decide to keep or let go of!

This is a great idea. And congrats on already starting to slim down your TBR! Do you have a goal in mind for how much you want to shorten your list, or does the number not matter to you too much? (I’m always in awe of bloggers who manage to keep their lists below 100–and I can’t even begin to understand how some keep theirs under 50.)

It really is! I already feel a sense of accomplishment for even LOOKING at my TBR haha. And no, I don’t really have a particular goal, but shortening it down to 100 sounds ideal. But I know that’s not gonna happen so I’ll be happy if I shorten it by at least 50 books. And how the heck does someone have a 50- TBR?? That can’t be right. It can’t be LOL

Hurray for a sense of accomplishment! I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you.
I know, right? =D

Not sure if I can watch any books go.. hehe.. I am ok to weave through the TBR list slowly though.. 🙂 I do want to keep Harry Potter too. I don’t recognize the last book but the cover is pretty.

Haha, I get you. It’s so hard to get rid of my books. I’ll keep all the HP books though 😀 Really excited to read them for the first time. I didn’t recognize the last book either but I must have put it on my TBR b/c of the cover too XD
