Top 5 Wednesday | My Favorite Summer Reads

Oh boy, it’s been a while since I’ve done a Top 5 Wednesday. I finally got the chance to check the theme for today and yay! It’s an awesome topic. Who doesn’t love a good summer read?

Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly book meme that was started by Ginger Reads Lainey and is now being looked after by Thoughts on Tomes. The topics can be found on Goodreads.

According to Goodreads:The weather is heating up (for half of the world), so what books remind you of summer and are your quintessential summer reads?

I don’t know about you guys, but I instantly think of contemporary books for summer reads! So here’s my list:

Paper Towns | John Green

Paper Towns

I read this book last summer and it just felt right. I loved the majority of this book (the ending could use some work) mostly because of the adventurous spirit of it. What better way to carry out the essence of summer than through an impromptu road trip? I think I’ll be rereading Paper Towns for this summer and many summers to come.

Anna and the French Kiss | Stephanie Perkins

17453983

I’ve recently read this book and all I could think when reading it was “Wow, this would have made for the perfect summer read!” This book with its fluffy romance and Paris setting inspire the wanderlust in all of us and as we all know, summer is the perfect time to travel. And if you don’t have the means to go anywhere, then this book has everything you need to help you travel far and experience new things while sitting at home.

Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour | Morgan Matson

Amy and Roger

This is the book that started it all for me. After reading this amazing story, all I wanted to do was travel, starting with an epic road trip across the nation with my closest friends during the summer after high school graduation, right before college. Even though that trip never happened, I was still inspired to travel far and wide sometime in my life, all because of this book. It’s the perfect summer read as it’ll take you places you’ve never been before.

A List of Cages | Robin Roe

25613472

While this book is a bit more on the sad side, the characters and their relationships with one another give off such positive vibes, it’s hard not to get good feelings. And that’s all I want during my summer. It’s a story of growth and love, of saddening realizations and moments of hope, a perfect combo that will break you down and lift you up at the same time during your summer days.

Second Chance Summer | Morgan Matson

Second chance summer

It’s literally got summer in the title. And I’m going to be honest, that’s the main reason why I chose it. But I also chose it because it’s got that well-known summer set-up with a small, heartbreaking spin on it. It’s a sad book, but it’s also romantic and funny, and a perfect book to take with you on summer vacation.

Bonus

The Host and Twilight | Stephanie Meyer & Graceling | Kristin Cashore

In other words, my guilty pleasures. For some reason, I get to the urge to revisit each of these books (two of which I actually like, *coughTheHostandGracelingcough*) every summer. There’s just something so cozy and summer-y about them.

  1. I also included Anna on the list. How can you not when she has an adorable romance in Paris! I also almost put Graceling on my list- I absolutely adore that book. I just think of it as a classic YA fantasy and Katsa and Po are some of my favorite characters. Great list!

    1. Anna is a fantastically adorable little read. It made my day when I read it. Yay! So glad you love Graceling too! Love the characters. Katsa and Po remain one of my all-time favorite OTPs in YA. Thank you! ❤

  2. Great picks for this topic Azia, I definitely agree that once the weather starts heating up that’s when I pull all the contemporaries off my to-read list. After our earlier conversation Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour is near the top of that list, and reading what you said about it here has just made me more excited to get around to it myself because I love books that are heavy on the wanderlust.
I also need to get around to A List of Cages at some point. It’s been on my to-read list ever since everyone was talking about it after it’s release, one day I’ll get to it! 😀

    1. There’s something about contemporaries (and rom-coms) that go hand in hand with summer, huh? Not really sure why that is lol. And yay! Glad you bumped it up your list 😀 Can’t wait to see what you think of it. It’s just the cutest little book.
And yes! Hopefully one day you’ll get to it and when you do, hope you’ll be as blown away by it as I was 😀 ❤

      1. I’m not sure either, but I think a lot of people feel that way so it’s not just us. It was mainly you talking about it in one of our earlier comments that caused me to bump it up so it’s all thanks to you Azia! 😀
        Fingers crossed right? 🙂
