Standalone Sunday | December 18th

I’m beginning to realize I haven’t read many standalone novels…I’m quickly running out of ideas and pretty soon, I’m gonna start recommending classics. I really need to expand my horizons haha. But anyways!

Standalone Sunday is a feature created by the lovely Megan over @ bookslayerReads where each Sunday you share a standalone book (a book not part of a series) that you loved or would like to recommend! Please be sure to check out Megan’s wonderful blog to see her original post and recommendations. And be sure to check around the blogosphere for more posts like this!

This week’s recommendation is:

Second Chance Summer | Morgan Matson

Second chance summer

Goodreads Synopsis

Taylor Edwards’ family might not be the closest-knit—everyone is a little too busy and overscheduled—but for the most part, they get along just fine. Then Taylor’s dad gets devastating news, and her parents decide that the family will spend one last summer all together at their old lake house in the Pocono Mountains.

Crammed into a place much smaller and more rustic than they are used to, they begin to get to know each other again. And Taylor discovers that the people she thought she had left behind haven’t actually gone anywhere. Her former best friend is still around, as is her first boyfriend…and he’s much cuter at seventeen than he was at twelve.

As the summer progresses and the Edwards become more of a family, they’re more aware than ever that they’re battling a ticking clock. Sometimes, though, there is just enough time to get a second chance—with family, with friends, and with love.”

I don’t read many YA contemporaries, not because I don’t enjoy them, but because I like to be completely disconnected from reality while reading. Meaning, YA High Fantasy is my boo. But whenever I fall in love with a contemporary, it usually comes from Sarah Dessen or Morgan Matson. I’d even go so far as to call them the queens of YA contemporary! Maybe Meg Cabot fits in there, too. I’m not sure. (If y’all know any other authors or YA contemporaries I should try out, I’d love your recommendations).

Second Chance Summer is my second favorite book from Morgan Matson, just after Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour. I thought the themes of heartbreak, love, family, friends, and hope were expertly crafted. The characters are perfectly relatable and the romance is sweet and realistic. It’s a sad story, but one that doesn’t completely break your heart as a reader. I actually teared up towards the end, even though I knew a certain event was coming, and yet, I didn’t feel defeated because the MC didn’t either. All in all, I think this book reflects the human emotions pretty well. I wouldn’t necessarily call it a feel good book, but it’s definitely a little slice of life everyone should have a piece of!

  1. Great pick for this week. I’ve only read one Morgan Matson book so far, Since You’ve Been Gone, and I definitely loved it. Even though that’s the only one I’ve read I definitely agree with your assessment that Morgan Matson is one of the queens of YA. I have the rest of her books on my to-read list for next year and I can’t wait to get started on them.
Normally fantasy is my go-to genre as well but I love the occasional YA contemporary book. Asides from Morgan Matson and Sarah Dessen I’d recommend Kasie West. Her books are really light, cute and fluffy but she’s definitely become one of my favourite authors! 😀

    1. Thank you! And I haven’t read that one just yet. I’ll have to add it to my list 😀 I don’t have many contemporary books on my TBR so I should definitely add more Matson and Dessen.

And yes! I love fantasy so much, but it’s good to have a break from it every now and then. Right now I’m reading Everything Everything and it’s like a breath of fresh air haha. And I’ll definitely check out Kasie West!! Thanks for the recommendation, Beth! 😀 ❤

      1. That’s all right! 😀 Well I’ve only read that book by her but it’s a great one so I hope you enjoy it as well. I’m slowly growing my YA contemporary TBR list but Morgan and Dessen are two musts on there.
Definitely, I need a break from fantasy every now and again and contemporary offers that at times. Everything Everything is on my to-read list as well, and I really hope you enjoy Kasie West as well!
        That’s all right! ❤

  2. I have heard so many people say they loved this book! I haven’t read anything by Morgan Matson, but I will have to check her out soon. Thanks for the rec. (PS: I wouldn’t mind one bit if you started recommending classics! I need to read more classics, myself!)

    1. I loved this book so much! And I highly recommend Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour, too. She’s an amazing writer. I think you’ll love her! 😀

And yay! That’s great to know. I have to read a few more classics too, but I have a few I’d love to recommend to others. Thank you, Megan! 😀

  3. I’ve heard so many great things about this book! And Morgan Matson’s other books as well. She’s one author whose books I need to read already. I see that Beth beat me to it but I was going to say that if you love Sarah Dessen then you’ll love Kasie West. I adored her book P.S. I Like You. It’s my top contemporary for this year and I highly recommend it. Great pick for this week, Azia!! 😊♥

    1. Thank you! ❤ If both you and Beth recommend Kasie West, then I'll definitely be adding her to my TBR! 😀 And yes! Matson is phenomenal. I haven't found a book I've disliked from her yet. So, I highly recommend. And if you do try out one of her books, I hope you love it 😀

      1. You’re welcome!! ♥
Yay! I hope you enjoy her books and much as the both of us have. I’ve only read one so far but the one I did read was so good.
I’ll definitely have to add her books to the list of contemporaries I plan on reading next year. 😊

  4. I like how you worded that you want to be completely disconnected from reality while reading.. I do too, but at the same time, I also look for something I can relate to or learn from. I like a contemporary break every now and then after going on the fantasy binge reading.. haha.. I haven’t read any books from either author yet. I do hope to read some next year. Thanks for the recommendation!

    1. I love my fantasy, but I agree. It’s nice to have a break from it every now and again. Right now I’m reading Everything Everything, and I’m really enjoying the slice of life aspect to the story.

No problem! 😀 I hope you enjoy the book if you ever get the chance to read it!

  5. Sarah Dessen is my YA contemporary queen, too – her books just take me straight back into my high school years and they’re always so, SO good. 💘

I’m 50/50 with Morgan Matson, but this book sounds interesting! I’ve only read The Unexpected Everything (which I liked) and Since You’ve Been Gone (which I’m OK about).

    1. I need to read more Dessen books! I’ve only read about two and that was way back in middle school. I’m sure she’s come out with some amazing ones since then. And I haven’t gotten to those Matson ones yet, although I’m really looking forward to The Unexpected Everything. I’ve heard great things about it 😀

      Thanks for commenting! ❤

      1. Yeees, please read more Dessen books! I pretty much spend my days going around the blogs so I could recommend her books to everyone who would want to listen to me. Which ones have you read? 😛

And no worries! I can’t believe I haven’t found your blog before today, haha.

      2. I think I’ve read This Lullaby and Along for the Ride. That’s it haha. I don’t read many contemporary books.

And same! I just checked out your amazing blog! I love it 😀
