Mid-month Reading Update + Reading Challenges | July 2020

This month has been going fairly well in regards to reading. I haven’t read all that much but at least I’ve finally stared a book that has been sitting on my shelves for at least 3 years. A tragedy really πŸ˜₯

I figured I’d share a quick update with y’all on what I’ve been reading, first impressions (since I have yet to write any legitimate reviews), and also a glance at how I’ve been doing with my 2020 reading challenges.

First Impressions: Adorable. Hilarious. Great characters with memorable personalities. A soft, fade-to-black sort of romance that feels refreshing and grounded.

First Impressions: Unique, creative, and original sci-fi. Great world-building. Nuanced and complex characters. Immersive. Surprising and unpredictable twists.

WICKED SAINTS | Emily A. Duncan

First Impressions: Good concept, disappointing execution. Uneven pacing. Dull world-building. Flat characters. Unconvincing romance. Repetitive, somewhat tedious writing.

I’m so happy that my book club decided to read Dark Matter for this month. I’ve been wanting to read this book for ages. And I FINALLY decided to pick up The Last Magician. That book has been sitting on my shelf for nearly 3 years and I have absolutely no idea why…And the worst part is I love it, so far. *facepalm* I love the concepts, the setting, the characters, the magic, the heists! I can already tell that this is going to be a 4 star, possibly 5 star, read for me.

My original aim was 70 books but I increased the number a few months ago since I was reading so much. I might be able to increase it again and maybe reach 100 by the end of the year! That’d be a first πŸ˜„

My original beat-the-backlist TBR has completely been abandoned at this point, as I’ve found more and more books that I’ve wanted to read on my Goodreads shelf and have read instead. My rereads have also changed up a bit, too.

I had so many books to reread on my TBR, but I honestly don’t think that I’m going to get to all of them. Though I do have Six of Crows, ACOMAF, and Blood of Eden on there. Those will be reread, for sure.

Currently, I have kicked 47 books off my backlist. And I’ve applied most of them to the bingo below! It’s shaping up, y’all.

These are the books I’ve eliminated from my backlist since March:

Halfway through and the reading is good. I’m going slower over these summer months but I’ll probably pick back up again in August since there are several releases I’d love to purchase. If not then, then most likely September will be the month I return to a TBR. But for now…MOOD READING.

Thanks for stopping by. Until next time πŸ’•

    1. I was really bummed too. It reminded me of the Grishaverse but it just wasn’t as well developed for me. I’m a little interested to read the second book (I heard it was a smidge better), but I’ll have to think on it. If you read Wicked Saints, I really hope you enjoy it more than I did 😊

    1. Oh no, that’s discouraging LOL. Honestly, I’ve been thinking on it, and I don’t think it’s really worth continuing on with the series. But I’ll be keeping the book for a little since it’s so pretty XD

    1. Yeah, I was really hoping some might have been exaggerating in their reviews, but the complaints were pretty spot on. I really wish it had worked out better. I guess I’ll just have to stick with Bardugo for now LOL
