Goodreads Synopsis

Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:

1) Woo the Shadow King.
2) Marry him.
3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.

No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.

But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen—all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?

Tricia Levenseller has become one of my go-to authors for books that are a little on the shorter side, but offer a good dose of adventure, strong female characters, and an enjoyable (though not necessarily deep or complex) plot. The Shadows Between Us delivers on all those elements and was most certainly a good time like Levenseller’s previous books.

Alessandra is a wonderfully cynical and Slytherin-esque character. I adored her scheming ways, her independence, and above all else, her confidence. She holds a great amount of agency and her ability to use her beauty and position to her advantage, while not necessarily good, is admirable. She marks a pleasant feminist picture, despite being a villainess. And thankfully, the author allowed Alessandra to have some female friendships that held little no drama, and were completely genuine despite her power-hungry, deceitful nature. The whole ordeal was both darkly funny and oddly refreshing.

I very much enjoyed the relationship between Alessandra and the Shadow King. They were perfectly suited to each other in their ambitiousness and desire to wield power for their own benefit. And being no strangers to death gave their romance a perfectly devious edge. Their entire relationship was gradual and well-paced, from beginning to end, and the endgame to their dangerous courtship was extremely satisfactory.

There were a few things that didn’t work as well for me, though. The setting is ridiculously vague as is the lore/origin of the Shadow King’s powers, the murder mystery sown throughout is pretty flimsy, and the twist at the end was predictable and short-lived. In fact, the whole book could have operated without the whodunnit subplot. Even so, most of these things are forgivable given the short length of the book.

I had a fantastic time with this book. It’s an entertaining adventure with amazing characters who are many things: hilarious, smart, caring, ambitious, deceitful, dangerous, and endearingly petty. The romance between two villains is a fun experience and the entire misadventure of Alessandra’s quest for power delivers in dark humor, female empowerment, and romance.

My Rating: 4 out of 5

  1. Ahhhh this sounds good! It’s embarrassing how I haven’t heard of a lot of books I see reviewed 😂 but I suppose that’s a good thing in that there are great reads out there for me to discover! ✨ Must be good as even with the drawbacks you mentioned it got 4 stars so I’m really intrigued! (Have you ever regretted giving a book a certain amount of stars later on when comparing it to other reads?). I will have to put this one in my online basket 📚 Great review! 💕

    1. I didn’t know about this book until I saw one blogger mention it lol. I haven’t really been shopping around as often. I like Levenseller’s books, though. They’re not perfect, but they are fun! 😀 I do recommend for a good time lol (And yes, all the time HAHA. I’m usually too generous with my ratings, tbh. If I didn’t feel so bad, I’d be giving out more 1 and 2 stars…) Thanks so much Elsie! ❤

  2. I haven’t read this book, it’s on my TBR. Levenseller has always been a hit or miss, but I’m really excited and hopefully it’s a really good book! I’ll go see if I can check it out as an ebook, or put it on hold at the library, whenever it opens back up again.

    1. Her world-building isn’t that strong but her characters are usually pretty great. This story wasn’t at all focused on the setting or the mythology of the world, but I think it’s pretty forgivable considering the size haha. I hope that you enjoy it once you get the chance to read it!
