Pumpkin Spice Latte Book Tag

Oh my goodness. A tag. It’s been a century and a day since I’ve done a proper tag. I’ve just gotten back into blogging semi-regularly so what better way to try to get back into the groove of things than to do a book tag!

A million thanks to Laura @ thebookcorps for tagging me in this adorable fall tag. I thought I’d get to this before November was out before all the focus turns to peppermint and chocolate!

PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE | A BOOK YOU DIDN’T THINK YOU’D LOVE

The title put me off so much because it tells you how the book ends. And it wasn’t just that the ending had been ruined but the ending already promises the reader heartbreak. I wasn’t really ready to give this book a chance to convince me that it could make me love it by the end, but lo and behold, Adam Silvera made me fall in love with the two MCs and so my heart was properly broken by the end. But I wasn’t as mad as I thought I would be. Knowing the ending helped ease the pain, and the journey of getting there felt much more rewarding than anticipated because of the amazing characters and their final adventure of self-discovery.

HOT APPLE CIDER | A BOOK THAT GOT YOU A BIT HOT UNDER THE COLLAR

Even though this hate-to-love romcom didn’t have that many sexy time scenes, there were quite a few intimate moments that played to your imagination, and sometimes anticipation of two characters finally getting together can be much more satisfying than the actual event itself. That’s not to say the actual “event” between Josh and Lucy wasn’t incredibly sexy and sweet. There were definitely a lot of blush-worthy moments in this book, most especially the last one. It’s both erotic and romantic, and even humorous. A very well-executed scene tbh.

PEANUT BUTTER HOT CHOCOLATE | A BOOK THAT FELT LIKE A WARM HUG

I read this book after seeing the movie, because the film felt like a warm hug and I wanted to see if the book would be the same way. In fact, it was even more so! Even though I really liked Noah Centineo’s performance, I thought that the book version of Peter was a little bit more nuanced and so I liked him a teeny bit better on the page. I love Lara Jean either way and the entire vibe of the story is just so warm. It’s definitely a book you can curl up with on a wintry day.

MAPLE PECAN LATTE | A BOOK YOU ENJOYED THAT WAS HARD TO GET INTO

I’ll be honest and say that even though The Night Circus is one of my favorite books, it took me a second to get into it. If I remember correctly, when I started the book, I thought the intro was beautifully written, but also painfully slow. Morgenstern was certainly taking her time building up the foundation of her characters and their magical world. So I ended up setting it down for a week or so before trying again. Once I got over the first few chapters, I was sucked into the fantastical narrative. By the end, this book became a favorite and a beautiful memory.

Blue | The Raven Cycle

I love the Raven Cycle and I absolutely adore all its characters. They’re interesting and odd and completely unique to the magical world Stiefvater builds through her lyrical prose. The Raven Boys, in particular, are the stars of the books (especially Ronan). And because the boys are all so wonderfully intriguing, I feel that Blue’s character gets a little lost among such powerhouses. On her own, she’s not necessarily vanilla, but when compared to the fascinating Raven Boys, she certainly becomes vanilla. For me, at least.

HOT BUTTERED RUM | A BOOK THAT WAS VELVETY SMOOTH TO READ

It took me nearly a year to read this book. I started reading it the month it came out, found that I wasn’t really in the mood, then revisited the book months later once I returned from my reading slump. Even though it took me a while to get through this book, it never went above my notice that the writing was just as smooth and effortless as I would expect from the fantastic Laini Taylor. Once I got into this book, I was fully impressed by just how smooth the prose was. It was overflowing with imagery and appealed to the senses. It was just so beautiful and wonderfully executed.

PUMPKIN CREAM COLD BREW | A CHARACTER WHOSE TEMPERAMENT IS ICY COLD

Originally, I wasn’t a fan of Zoya in the original Grisha trilogy. She was arrogant, prejudiced, seemingly unsympathetic, and just plain cruel in some cases. There were moments when she showed another side to her character, but overall, Zoya wasn’t the warmest person. My opinion of Zoya changed dramatically after reading King of Scars. There is much more to her story then I ever realized and her cold exterior is both a natural part of her personality and a defense mechanism. She has several layers and her cold temperament only makes her all the more intriguing.

SALTED CARAMEL MOCHA | A BOOK THAT YOU’RE SALTY ABOUT

I really like Kiersten White as an author. But I think this book missed the mark a bit, mostly in the character department. I didn’t care for a single one of the characters (except maybe Doug) and the MC and her sister proved to be some of the worst siblings I’ve read in a while. Artemis and Nina’s relationship was a hazardous mess that became messy for no apparent reason. All the characters’ motivations seemed genuinely confusing, the romance was eh, and the entire story seemed to fall very short of its potential. I was looking forward to a Buffy inspired tale and a refreshing return to urban fantasy, but this one didn’t quite cut it for me.

HONEY BEE LATTE | A CHARACTER WHO IS SWEET

Hermione Granger might just be one of the sweetest characters in literature. Honestly. I know that her complete adherence to rule and regulation can get very frustrating, especially since her utmost respect for Hogwarts, its authority figures, and just the entire wizarding world in general may sometimes result in her getting her friends in trouble. Despite this, her actions are rarely done out of malice and almost everything she does is to help and protect her friends, either from outside threats or from themselves. I really do dislike how Harry and Ron treat her sometimes, and even though they do, she is very understanding and still does her best to be a good friend.

GINGERBREAD LATTE | A CHARACTER YOU’D TAKE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS

Bringing Prince Cardan home for Christmas would be (1) the most hilarious mistake ever made and (2) the best mistake ever made. Cardan’s exaggerated mischievousness, fondness for extravagance and debauchery, and lack of knowledge of the human world would probably result in the funniest, and most embarrassing Christmas party in existence. But it would also probably end up being one of the most memorable. There is a sweet side to him, but you’d really have to know how to navigate his faerie nature to coax it out. I love his character, and he’d probably make for a terrible plus one but I would, no doubt, be entertained by his presence.
