Reading Update: Devouring Fantasy

Usually, in the summer I’m always in the mood to read contemporary books. But this summer, I’m more focused on getting through those unread books in my library. Which means tons of fantasy. Fantasy galore. All I GOT is fantasy. But there are a couple contemporary reads along with some sci-fi sprinkled here and there.

This month I started off pretty strong. I’ve got two books already done these past few days, and I’m working my way through three more as I type this out!

Right after finishing up To Kill A Kingdom, I was immediately in the mood to read Our Dark Duet. Not sure why I ended up in the mood for it, but I’m glad I did because it was excellent!

I absolutely loved To Kill A Kingdom. It had just the right amount of darkness, romance, and cruelty that I expected from a grimmer version of the original Little Mermaid tale (which is already hella dark). Could it have been even more vicious? Possibly. But I’m really happy with how the story turned out.

As for Our Dark Duet, I’m really hurt by the ending, and I’m gonna need a moment to recover, thanks. What a great duology, though. So much meaning packed into all its characters. The story is so bittersweet that my heart aches. The good kind of ache, though!

The Novice | Taran Matharu

This one is a cool choice for me because I feel as if it’s one of the few YA fantasy novels that is both written by a male author and features a male MC. Women dominate the YA industry, so I think this will be a fresh and exciting read!

Undead Girl Gang | Lily Anderson

This isn’t my usual sort of book but I was looking for any available audio book that might hold my interest and this one popped up. I use audio book mostly for books I know I won’t physically pick up to read, so this was fitting.

I haven’t heard much about it, though that doesn’t say all that much since I haven’t really been in the loop for a while now. The reviews aren’t sparkling, but maybe I’ll be surprised?

City of Lost Souls | Cassandra Clare

Continuing on with my great reread of the TMI series, Daan and I have moved on to the second to last book of this amazing series. I’m so glad I decided to do this with a reading buddy. It makes it so much more fun to be able to chat about what went down! Also, I remember about 0% of this book so far. Feels like my first time!

So that’s what I’m up to right now. I was going to start Iron Gold, but I figured I’d save it for later, when Dark Age is just about to be released. I don’t want to be suspended in anticipation for too long, so I’ll be reading the fourth Red Rising installment about a week or two before the newest one comes out 😀

And that’s all for now! Thanks so much for stopping by. Until next time ❤

  1. Hi Azia,
I love Fantasy, so I really enjoyed reading this post.
“Our Dark Duet” is on my Tbr, I’ve read and loved the first volume, but I’m waiting for the second one to be published in my own country and it is taking ages. I’m so mad about it.
“City of Lost Souls” is my least favourite of the series (because of Jace conditions, you know…. and also because I strongly dislike Sebastian), but rereading the series is a wonderful idea! I have to do that too any time soon. I’m so obsessed with it.

    1. Oh no! Well, I hope that you get the chance to read Our Dark Duet soon, if you haven’t already. I think it was a very fitting end to the characters’ stories.

The Mortal Instruments may not be the most perfect series, but I can’t help but love them. They are my obsession as well LOL. I can barely stop myself from buying all the special editions haha

  2. I absolutely agree To Kill a Kingdom could have been even darker but man, I ADORED that book and will lay to rest with it ❤ ❤ ❤ I'm so so glad you loved it too AAAHHHHH *cries happily* I've seen so many people hate on it or find it meh that my faith in humanity was beginning to dim a bit xD (JK, I get we all have different tastes 😉 )

I feel like summer does make you want to read more contemporaries but I'm fantasy trash through and through, so will probably end up reading a lot of those myself LOL I'm especially intrigued by The Novice as I've seen it pop in everywhere lately and, like you, enjoy a good male MC POV once in a while.

Best of luck with your reading endeavours, my lovely! May we succeed in killing our growing TBRs for good xD

    1. I’m a little sad that To Kill a Kingdom didn’t click with as many people as I thought it would but as you said, different tastes. I adored it and I’ll probably reread it sometime next year lol. I can’t wait to read Christo’s new book!

The Novice was pretty good! I think it would have been better for me if I had read it when I was younger though. Even so, I would love to continue on with the series. It’s like a beginner’s book to worlds similar to LOTR or Shannara haha

      Thank you, my friend ❤

P.S. I know this is a hella late response. So sorry ❤
