WRAP UP 2019 | April Reads and Reviews

This month was kind of interesting. My reading game was pretty strong in the beginning, but then I got stuck on The Lies of Locke Lamora and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I didn’t really pay attention to how big they were until I was in the middle of them and began wondering how much longer it would take me to finish up. Those books are legit TOMES. I’m talkin’ 700+ pages. I wasn’t ready. So, I didn’t really read as many books as I had hoped I would read, but at least I managed to knock off some of the two largest books from my TBR!

I’ve only just finished Harry Potter, so I can’t include it in this wrap up, meaning I only got through four books this month 😦

THE CASE FOR JAMIE (Charlotte Holmes #3) | Brittany Cavallaro

Thoughts: Excellent writing. Nuanced. Strong character development in both the leading characters. Missed their dynamic as a pair, but their individual journeys just as fascinating. Unpredictable. Fun and funny and romantic.

CITY OF FALLEN ANGELS (The Mortal Instruments #4) | Cassandra Clare

Thoughts: Unnecessary drama and angst, though expected. A reminder that, yes, Simon is not perfect. Book of rocky relationships. Great action sequences and properly creepy in some places. A foreboding ending that implies chaos and devastation is on its way.

Thoughts: Not as memorable as I would have liked. Characters not extremely likable. Interesting exploration and reasonably fair depiction of prosopagnogia. Couldn’t get behind the romance: not fully fleshed out. Boring.

Thoughts: Ridiculously fun and violent. In-depth world-building. Imaginative. Tone of the story makes a 180 by the middle of the book: heist to revenge plot, but the transition is smooth. Hilarious and likable characters. One of the best times I’ve had while reading a book.

The Unread Books in My Library

Why I’ve Gotten So Bad at Blog Hopping Recently

I attended my good friend, Maeve’s wedding on April 13th in Buffalo, New York! That occasion marked the first time I’ve ever been to Buffalo and the first time that I’ve ever been invited to a wedding without my family! It was a fantastic time, a beautiful ceremony and reception, and Maeve was so stunning in her dress.

It was an amazing feeling to be reunited with her after three years following our return from Ireland in 2016. Hopefully we can meet again much sooner!

  • I finally got my hair cut! It’s been about five years, my hair was long but unhealthy with the numerous split ends I had. I was very happy with the end result!
  • The weekend of April 27 and 28 was INTENSE. I saw Avenger’s: Endgame on Saturday (IT. WAS. AMAZING.) and I saw GOT’s The Battle of Winterfell on Sunday (Not as amazing as expected, but still a really good episode!)

So I thought that I would read The Red Scrolls of Magic the moment it came out, but when it came down to it, I just wasn’t in the mood. I ended up reading The Lies of Locke Lamora instead. So now that I’ve gotten through both Locke Lamora and Order of the Phoenix, I think I might finally read Red Scrolls. But right now, I’m giving my brain a rest. I decided to read something lighter for the moment.

I hope to do a reading update sometime this week to let you know what I’m reading and what I plan on reading this month!

But for now, thanks for stopping by! Until next time ❤

  1. Don’t worry – I think I only read one book in April -_- It was just a bad month for reading for me! Thankfully I finally finished the book I’ve been stuck on this weekend and I’m hoping to pick up steam – so it’s also a bit of light reading time for me. I’m putting Locke Lamora on my reading list now, though – it sounds brilliant!!

I’m glad you got to go to Maeve’s wedding (what a dress!). I went to my first two weddings without any of my family last year, and both of them were such a great time 😀

Also: ENDGAME. Waaaaaaaaaah. I still have so many emotions.

    1. LOL, well, managing to read anything at all is an accomplishment, especially nowadays. It seems really busy lately! But yay! Glad you managed to finish your book. Hopefully your next reads go smoothly and you enjoy. Yas, please add Locke Lamora. It’s kind of an oddball sort of book, but it’s so much fun!

Thank you! I had a lovely time. It was all worth it to see my friend again. And that dress! We’re finally in the wedding invite club LOL.

P.S. Yes, Endgame destroyed me…I loved the final battle and that ending sequence 3000

  2. Oh it’s a shame your reading game wasn’t as strong as you would have liked it to be Azia, but getting two of the biggest books knocked off your TBR list is till an achievement (and something I need to do with two massive books still sitting on my TBR list as well).
I need to get around to City of Fallen Angels soon (it’s been on my TBR list forever) and oh your friend looks beautiful in her wedding dress. I hope you had a wonderful day, it must have been fun attending her wedding. I’ve only attended one of my friends weddings (because only one of them is married) but it was a wonderful day. I’m also really glad you enjoyed Avengers Endgame too, I saw it when it was released and oh god it was just amazing!
Great recap, and I hope you have a brilliant May as well. 🙂 ❤

    1. It always feel good to whittle down your TBR, but it feels even better when you knock of those huge reads sitting there haha. What are some of the bigger books you’ve still got to read??
And yes! Even though City of Fallen Angels isn’t the best one so far, it sets up some really interesting events that are to go down in the series later on.
Isn’t she gorgeous? I couldn’t stop smiling whenever I saw her in that dress. Weddings are great fun with the right company!
Even though I expected that ending, I’ve still got some feelings lol. Endgame was such a fantastic way to end that phase of Marvel.
Thanks so much! Same to you! ❤ 😀

      1. I’ve got three; The Priory of the Orange Tree, The Kingdom of Copper and Kingdom of Ash. I’ll get around to them one day, and I’ll probably really love the it’s just picking them up in the first place.
Yep, I’ve always had loads of fun at the weddings I’ve been to because the company has been great every time.
I feel like you can expect the ending but still be sucker punched by it, that was my reaction anyways.
        That’s all right, and thanks. 🙂 ❤

      2. Ah yes, Priory is on my list as well. I’ll get around to it…someday haha. I hope you manage to get around to those books some day! I know getting started on such huge books can be a challenge, but once you begin, it’s a little easier to stay on, especially if the book is good!
Sucker-punched is a good way to describe it haha. The prospect of a future Asguardians of the Galaxy keeps me going though LOL

    1. TMI just seems like the perfect summer read, right?! I hope you enjoy reading the rest of the series! City of Bones is hard to beat, mostly in that it’s the first in the series and introduces us to a world and characters we fall in love with. I think, so far, I like City of Ashes best…Maybe. I don’t know LOL. I still haven’t decided, even after all these years XD

  3. I have heard amazing things about the Charlotte Holmes series. I seriously need to pick up at least the first book soon! I’m also really in the mood for mysteries at the moment. 😀 Your friend looks sooo gorgeous in her dress! ❤

    1. The Charlotte Holmes series is fantastic. So well written and great character development. The plot to the second one is a bit eh, but the writing is still amazing. I definitely say give it a try. I’m planning to read the last book sometime next month!
      And doesn’t she?! 😀 ❤
