Hey guys, how’s it goin?!

giphy4

It’s actually been a while since I’ve written a post. Most of my recent posts were scheduled weeks before. I haven’t really had the time or energy to blog these past few weeks. But I managed to blog hop here and there. Not as much as I would like to though :/

Life Update

*GIF alert*

So I’ve been working at Starbucks for two weeks now and it’s going well enough, I suppose. I like the people I work with and I enjoy being able to connect with some of the customers. There’s always a downside, of course. I still have to practice my hot bar skills (so if you need a latte, you ain’t gettin’ it from me) and sometimes complex orders trip me up. And also, some customers can just be, to be frank, assholes.

giphy2

But I’m trying to stay positive. One day I’ll get in the groove and then most of the stress I’m feeling will melt away and everything will be fine. Just. Fine.

Also, working all 7 days of the week is kicking my ass. I finally realized this once I took three naps yesterday–one right after I got home from work, one sometime in the late afternoon, and one right before making this post.

giphy

I literally woke up from a nap thinking I couldn’t wait until I finished this post so I could go to sleep, for real this time though. My energy levels have been nonexistent these past few days, so if it’s taking me forever to respond to your comments, that’s why 😦

I plan to take a day off this Friday though, and just treat myself to a day of relaxation and catch up on some blogging. But I’ll be trying real hard to just give myself some time to read, watch some TV, blog, and just RELAX.

On another note…

While I’ve been away, I’ve been doing some reading! Here are the books I’ve read in the past couple of weeks!

Finished

Thirteen Reasons Why | Jay Asher

Initial Thoughts: Months after watching the show, I finally took the leap and read the book. I know this book is pretty controversial nowadays, but it’s a book that makes a statement. Does it do it perfectly? No. I’m not a huge fan of the tape premise, but it makes a point, and that’s what Jay Asher set out to do. And I also think the characters, namely Clay, are pretty hollow. (The show did better in giving the characters actual personalities and voices you could connect with.) Despite its flaws, this is a powerful story that explores themes of bullying, mental illness, and suicide.

This Savage Song | Victoria Schwab

Initial Thoughts: Amazing world-building. Potent character development. Engaging plot. Suspenseful and thrilling action sequences. Fantastic platonic relationship between Kate and August (hope they stay that way in Our Dark Duet). Loved this book and its characters. Wish the parent figures were a bit more fleshed out, though. One of the best dystopian/paranormal books I’ve read since the Blood of Eden series. Can’t wait to read the second one!

Noteworthy | Riley Redgate

Initial Thoughts: Easily one of my favorite contemporaries I’ve read this year! Heart-warming and humorous. A diverse cast of fun and relatable characters. Like Pitch Perfect, except much more grounded. Various themes of identity, self-discovery, intersectionality, health and lifestyle, trust, loyalty, friendship, family, education, and so on. Very well-written and hard to put down. Loved every bit of this one.

DNF'd

While I managed to read a few good ones, there were two books I recently gave up on. I haven’t had this many DNFs within a year, but I’ve promised myself that if I’m having trouble finishing a book, then I might as well put it down for good.  No need to punish myself.

The Thousandth Floor | Katharine McGee

For the life of me, I could not finish The Thousandth Floor. It’s just not my type of book. While the futuristic aspect was enjoyable, I couldn’t get past the whole Gossip Girl feel of it. I’ve never been a fan of Gossip Girl or the Luxe series or any other book that’s just like them (basically anything with over-the-top drama). So, I just had to let it go. I didn’t like any of the characters and some of the relationships were slightly off-putting. It’s probably a good book, just not the book for me.

Soundless| Richelle Mead

This book was just boring. I got about 130 pages in before calling it quits. I couldn’t connect with any of the characters and nothing really interesting happens. The concept was cool, but the execution seems to be lacking, especially in the representation of Chinese culture and folklore, neither of which I experienced fully in the pages I read. So, it turned out to be a pretty dissatisfying read. Had to say goodbye.

Spontaneous | Aaron Starmer

This book is strange. But I like it so far. The MC is very brash and has a straightforward voice/attitude that I find appealing. She’s very funny and the way the book is written keeps me entertained. I’m not really sold on the romance (it came out of the blue, to be honest) but I guess I’ll just have to wait and see how it plays out.

That’s all for now. I’ve got a discussion post in the works as well as some more reviews, some tags, awards, a bookish post about my shelves, and a couple of other things coming up in the next few weeks. I’ll be trying pop on over to some of your blogs to catch up on some of the amazing posts I’ve missed (what’s new?) and hopefully, I can get a blogging schedule up and running for myself for the coming weeks so I won’t always be so behind.

Until then, I hope y’all are doin’ all right. Thanks for stoppin’ by and I’ll see you soon! ❤

  1. I like how you consider blogging relaxing 😅
A lot of people on Booktube were disappointed with Soundless a few years ago I believe. I’ve just accepted that it’s not great at this point haha

    1. LOL, earlier this year blogging was a little more stressful. But now I consider it a welcome break from the crazy work schedule I got going haha
And yeah, I had heard only a little bit about how Soundless wasn’t as good as its blurb, but I’d thought I’d give it a go anyways. Honestly, it was a waste of time. I like Richelle Mead but it definitely is not her best work :/

  2. Oh I’m sorry people are assholes to you! I don’t even know what a latte contains so I guess you are a pro by just making the basics. I’ve read Soundless last year and it was ok but a calmer and less plot-ier (that’s not a real word is it? using it anyway) than most books. I would definitely not have the same patience to finish it now though haha!

    1. Eh it’s okay! Just part of the customer service experience, I guess haha. I have a pretty tough skin, though, so all their bad behavior does is amuse (and annoy) me XD Agreed. Soundless is much more character-based than plot-based but I couldn’t connect with the characters, so it just wasn’t working out for me. My patience had been wearing thin about 50 pages. Tried to push through, but just couldn’t make it happen. Ah well, on to the next one!

i‘m so glad you loved „this savage song“ – it’s soooooo good! 😍

    1. I have! And I will!<3
And This Savage Song is so good! Don't like it as much as Shades of Magic, but since it's a different genre, I can say that it's my favorite dystopian by Schwab haha
Oh I'm so glad you have love for The Thousandth Floor 😀 Honestly, I recognize how entertaining the book is, but since Gossip Girl ain't my thing, I just can't appreciate it the way it should be appreciated. So, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Hopefully you enjoy the second one just as well if not more than the first! I heard it was pretty great from other fans of the series 🙂

  4. ohh awesome, congrats new barista!!
I worked at Starbucks for a little over 2 years. It does get easier – soon you will be a pro! 🙂
Making hot drinks was actually my favorite – it’s the frappuccinos that are quite annoying – so much work!
But, yes some customers are ….well you know how it is yourself 🙂

    1. Thanks so much!!
That’s wonderful! It’s a crazy, fast-paced job, but it keeps me busy, which I like 🙂 Can’t wait to become a pro like you (which, I’m assuming, you were after 2 years!) And I’m the complete opposite. I find making the frapps easier than making the hot drinks. Not sure why. They have so many more steps. LOL, maybe I’m just complicated.
I enjoy seeing some of the same customers over again. Most are really cool people. Others, not so much. But I find that there are more friendly people than there are unfriendly ones, so my day’s not always so terrible! 😀

  5. Oh I don’t know how you’re working seven days of the week Azia, I wouldn’t be able to manage that and it sounds like you really deserve a day off. I hope Friday will be a nice relaxing day, you definitely deserve that. 🙂
Also I am so thrilled to see you loved This Savage Song. I thought it was amazing and while it’s not my favourite V.E. Schwab book (I don’t think I need to tell you what is! :D) it’s still an incredible book right? I read Soundless ages ago and definitely agree with your initial thoughts on it. That isn’t one I could recommend to anyone.
    Great post Azia. 🙂 ❤

    1. Aw, thanks Beth! And yeah, seven days a week is pretty intense. I’m so tired most days that I always feel sad when I’m too tired to blog and respond to everyone’s posts and the comments on my own site. But I hope to work that into my schedule somehow regardless. I plan to make Friday a really enjoyable day. I need to treat myself LOL
And agreed! I don’t like it as much as Shades of Magic but it’s still a pretty strong piece of work. I can’t wait to get around to reading the second book! I heard it’s going to take me on an emotional roller coaster. So, that something to look forward to haha XD
Soundless just isn’t that good. Not on the top of my book recs either.
      Thank you, Beth! ❤ 😀

      1. Well you definitely deserve a break. There are times when I can’t find the time to blog and I get that feeling as well. I just think my blog deserves all my effort being put into it and it makes me feel a little better about leaving it until I’m feeling more myself again. 🙂
Can anything ever beat the Shades of Magic series? I don’t think so but it’s not my all-time favourite for nothing I suppose. The second is a rollercoaster and I really hope you enjoy it. 😀
        That’s all right! 🙂 ❤️

  6. Congrats on the job! I LOVE my SB Baristas! they are AMAZING & I seriously couldn’t get any order right with my terrible memory. I have total faith that you will get it down packed in no time though 😉 a day off (especially a Friday) is always a great idea, resets & refreshes. OMG! can’t wait for you to read Our Dark Duet! I didn’t think it could get better than This Savage Song but it over exceeded my expectations. I’ll be on the lookout for your thoughts. Happy resting & reading Azia! 🙂

    1. Thank you, Lilly!! I enjoy the routine of it and once I get the recipes down, I hope I can focus more on connecting with the customers and remembering their names and orders. I already have a couple people down and I love making them smile when I remember them 😀 Thanks for the support! ❤
And a day off, or a "treat yo self" day is much needed. I have brunch and a movie planned haha.
Our Dark Duet sounds extremely promising. I've heard nothing but good things about it so far. I can't wait to see what happens to my little August (I have so much love for him. He is my pure cinnamon roll). Thanks so much, Lilly! 😀

  7. I’m glad to hear that Starbucks is going well! Ugh, some people can just be absolute asshats hey. I worked at a fast-food restaurant from when I was 14-17 and I just remember you meet some really nice people, but then you meet people who think they are above you (which they definitely are NOT). You will find your groove love, it can take a little bit but one day you will find your own rhythm and it will all make sense. Working 7 days a week sounds EXHAUSTING so I don’t blame you for wanting to nap. I work 5 days a week and I need naps all weekend hahaha. Make sure you take some time to recharge xx

    1. Thank you, Steff! 😀 And can’t they?? It’s amazing that they think bad behavior will get them anywhere. It’s the nice customers that really make my day! And I’m so looking forward to finding my rhythm. It’ll make my days so much more enjoyable, I think. And 7 days is really tiring but I just keep telling myself “money” LOL. It’s worth it, but I think a day off to refresh, destress, and recharge is definitely going to happen. Thanks for the encouragement! It’s much needed ❤

  8. YAAAAYYY you’re back!!! And your post is so relatable, it feels like we’re both the same person. Seriously. No time for anything? Check. Working our asses off and feeling tired all the time? Check. No mood for blogging? Hells yeah check.
Ugh so sorry to hear you’re in the same situation… It really sucks! I’ve finally found some time to blog hop as well but it still feels like I’ve only skimmed the surface lol Always so much to read and do!
I’m glad you’re slowly but surely getting back on track. I find the first month at a new job is always the hardest. After that, it gets so much easier. Hang in there and best of luck learning some mad hot bar skills! You know Fall is here… And that means tons of hot drinks (and Pumpkin Spice Latte… A LOT of it!)
Great post, Azia ❤ And welcome back!!! *hugs tightly*

    1. It’s just so saddening, but I always feel determined to bounce back and get back on track with blogging and other hobbies of mine. I’d hate to neglect them for too long, you know?
I’m sorry to hear you’re in the same situation as me, too! Hopefully we can both find our feet again soon 😀
Soooo many hot drinks! But I think I’m getting the hang of it ❤
Thanks so much Sophie! It's always great to hear from you ˆ_ˆ

Hehehe glad to hear it! And always great chatting with you too ❤ ❤

  9. Your busy schedule! Aww.. sorry you had to encounter with those bad customers. People can be ugly when they are thirsty or hungry haha.. take your time. Everything is hard in the beginning. Do you miss being a student now? 🙂 Life after graduation is tough isn’t it? 🙂 I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy The Thousandth Floor. It is very gossip girl like haha.. I haven’t read Soundless yet but I’m glad to know it’s boring because I don’t plan on reading it 🙂 I also liked This Savage Song and it’s great that you like it too. Take more rests when you can! 🙂

    1. LOL, yeah people are scary when they’re hangry or…thangry (let’s pretend that’s an actual term) XD I do miss being a student and I kind of would like to go back to a school environment, maybe for my MFA! I just like being in school though haha. Life’s really tough but I’ll get the hang of it eventually! And yeah, I would advise against Soundless. Savage Song, though, is awesome. Can’t wait to read the sequel. And I will! Thank you! ❤
