My Top 5 Favorite Bromances

If there’s one thing I love more than strong friendships, it’s strong friendships among male characters. There’s something just so heartwarming about reading about guys who are so close, their relationship is at times (understandably) mistaken to be romantic.  Sure, some bromances turn into real romances, but it’s always fun to read about how those relationships play out on the pages.

Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly book meme that was started by Ginger Reads Lainey and is now being looked after by Thoughts on Tomes. The topics can be found on Goodreads.

According to Goodreads:I think we have done this topic before in the distant past, but who doesn’t love a good bromance? Bromance = platonic relationship between two characters who identify as male.”

Here are some of my favorite bromances in literature!

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson | Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Stories

I think of Holmes and Watson as the ultimate definition of bromance. These two characters, portrayed in either literature, film, or television, are depicted as extremely close mates who rely on one another for entertainment and support. My favorite version of these two friends is the BBC version, but Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law had great chemistry in the films, and of course, the original book versions of them are just the best!

Jem and Will | The Infernal Devices

Will and Jem are possibly my favorite bromance in all of YA. I loved how much they loved and respected each other, despite certain obstacles that would stand in their way. They were just so understanding of one another and their friendship was truly something special.

Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy | Pride and Prejudice

Sure, Darcy was a bit presumptuous in his interference of Bingley’s relationship with Jane, but at least his intentions were good. And let’s face it, Bingley’s kind and goodly nature is a perfect complement to Darcy’s stoic, sometimes insufferable nature. They’d do anything for one other, it seems. Basically, these two were made for each other.

Rhys, Cassian, and Azriel | A Court of Mist and Fury

Not all bromances come in pairs. Sometimes, they come in trios. Rhys, Cassian, and Azriel are beyond my favorite trio of guy friends. Their love for one another comes in the shape of humor and insults, as well as a genuine care for one another’s well-being along with high doses of respect. There’s nothing more amazing (and sexy) than that.

Note: Even though I found a few pics of just the three boys, I really liked how the three boys looked in this particular picture. Plus, it doesn’t hurt to have the ladies there too!

Patroclus and Achilles | The Illiad

I’m specifically talking about The Illiad version of these two because in that, the relationship between them is not clearly stated. If interpreted as platonic friends, then these two were incredible friends (brothers, even) that stood by, fought, and defended one another until death. If that’s not an incredible bromance, I don’t know what is. But if we’re talking about the Song of Achilles version of these two, then they make an exemplary love story! Either way, I love their relationship ❤

Questionable Bonuses

Rhy and Kell | Shades of Magic

This is a questionable choice because they’re already brothers. So…would it be weird/wrong to say the relationship they have is a bromance – AKA a bro romance?????????)

Nevertheless, I love the relationship between these two. One of the strongest brotherly relationships/sibling relationships/friendships I’ve ever seen!

Kit and Ty| The Dark Artifices

I am 99.9999999% sure that the relationship between these two will no longer be the bromance that I adore and will instead become a full-fledge romance in the third book. But for right now, I’m in love with their dynamic, and I especially love how well Kit responds to Ty and his uniqueness.

    1. I actually haven’t read too many Sherlock stories myself. I was mostly thinking of the BBC version when including them haha. That show is amazing!
I just love how well Bingley and Darcy get along. And can’t forget Kell and Rhy. Their relationship was one of my favorites I’ve read in a while! ❤

  1. Oh great picks for this feature Azia. 🙂 Even though they are brothers I love that you included Kell and Rhy. I mean technically Kell is adopted so its not like their blood brothers, you could say they were included because of that reason. Either way I would have featured them for this topic if I’d taken part.
I haven’t got too far into Clare’s Shadowhunter series but I loved Alec and Jace so I’m sure I’ll love Will and Jem and Ty and Kit as well, when I get to their books.
Also YAY, definitely glad to see the Inner Circle from ACOTAR on this list as well.
    Again great picks! 😀 ❤

    1. Thanks, Beth! ❤ And yeah. I think it's fine to say they have a bromance because of their not being blood-related. I just LOVE how close they were. Alec and Jace had a wonderful relationship, but I personally adored Jem and Will's relationship a bit more. Their circumstances regarding their love lives were so much more complicated than Jace and Alec's romantic relationships. I'm curious to see what you think of them once you get around to reading TID! And YAS. I think you'll love Kit and Ty's dynamic, as well 😀
Can't forget the Inner Circle. They are friendship perfection haha

      1. That’s all right! ❤ See now I just need to get around to The Infernal Devices that little bit sooner. Everyone seems to love the series so much and I need to see what the fuss is all about. Fair warning after hearing what people have said about Lord of Shadows I won't be reading that series until the third book is released! 😀

      2. Unfortunately, this is true *cries* At least there’s something to keep our interest in the interim! I actually might pick up The Bane Chronicles or The Shadowhunter Academy series as well!

    1. Bingley and Darcy are so perfect haha. And I much prefer Patroclus and Achilles and lovers, too! The Song of Achilles is one of the best interpretations of The Illiad, I think, because of that dynamic 🙂 Them as friends, though, is also something pretty special!

    1. I love both of them. Darcy and Bingley were my first favorite bromance before Sherlock and Watson came into my life haha. My favorite YA bromances came a bit later 😀 All of them are so amazing!

    1. Aren’t they? I think they’re possibly one of the best, if not the best, bromance in YA fantasy. And SAME. I love Tessa and so shipping them with her was well and good. But I’m pretty sure they would have made an excellent couple if Tessa were not in the picture 🙂

They are in an ever-changing dynamic of protecting, teasing and supporting each other 😍

  3. I love this list!! I especially like Jem and Will (the feels!!), Mr. Bingley and Darcy, and Rhys, Cassian and Azriel ❤ I haven't read The Dark Artifices YET, and you got me even more excited to start watching Sherlock haha

    1. Jem and Willa re probably my favorite out of the list. Although, the trio is a close second! I think you’ll LOVE the Dark Artifices 😀 And YAS. Please watch the BBC version of Sherlock. It is FANTASTIC ❤

  4. Jem and Will are the epitome of bromance, urgh my heart.
I so need Kitty to become canon lol. I can’t deal with them being in a platonic relationship XD

    1. Aren’t they?? They’re just bromance perfection ❤
I really need to see it happen too. I thought it'd happen in LOS but guess we just have to wait a little longer *wails*

  5. I also like Jem and Will too. They are so sweet 🙂 I need to read the other books! And I thought Rhy is already with… (I don’t want to write a spoiler but I think you finished the series didn’t you? Alucard..)

    1. Yes, please do! TID is amazing ❤ And yeah, I finished the series. I know who Rhy ends up with. But he and Kell still have a platonic, brotherly relationship 🙂 That's why I picked them! ❤ I love their bromance!
