Wrap Up | My July Reads and Reviews

I can’t believe July is already over. Fall is just around the corner and I couldn’t be more excited! Come to me pumpkin spices and horror flicks. I’ve missed you….

200-1
I know this is premature but….

This month I changed up my reading habits and decided to forego a reading list in favor of catering to my mood. I also reduced my Goodreads Challenge (a discussion post saved for later) and as a result, I read far less than I usually would, but I enjoyed the reading process far more than usual. It was really laid back and I didn’t feel pressed for time. Which was good because I’ve been stressing out pretty badly this entire month.

I’ve been interviewed a few times these past few weeks, so my focus hasn’t been on blogging, but on landing a job. I feel terrible because I haven’t really blog hopped and I feel like I’ve missed out on a lot. But, since it looks like I finally found a job, I may just be able to return to blogging without the stress of being unemployed!!

Anyways, let’s take a look back at my July!

What I've Read

Cold Summer | Gwen Cole | Review to Come

Initial Thoughts: An interesting YA time travel book with a cute romance that could have been developed just a bit more and a very heartfelt look into strained family relations and PTSD. Very good but could have been a bit better.

By Your Side | Kasie West | Review to Come

Initial Thoughts: A pretty cute book. The romance was sweet with a side of fluff and hardship. A bit surprised (and slightly disappointed) at how short the library segment was in comparison to the rest of the story. It wasn’t the perfect contemporary but I liked some of the issues that were explored in the book.

The Unexpected Everything | Morgan Watson | Review to Come

Initial Thoughts: Morgan Matson is a contemporary queen. One of the most relatable books in YA. Loved all the characters. A very insightful look into teenage friendships and the unexpected surprises for those who are maturing and discovering themselves.

When Dimple Met Rishi | Sandhya Menon | Review to Come

Initial Thoughts: Absolutely adorable. Rishi is a pure cinnamon role too good for this world. Dimple was a little annoying at first but I admired her determination and ambition. Loved their romance and the authenticity of their culture and traditions.

Dreams of God & Monsters | Laini Taylor | Review to Come

Initial Thoughts: No one is as surprised as me when I say I thought this book was a bit disappointing. By no means a bad book. Just not the book I wanted. All the characters are amazing, especially Liraz and Ziri. But the action was scarce, the angst was high, and the ending was lackluster. Liked it, but not as much as I hoped I would?

Now I Rise | Kiersten White | Review to Come

Initial Thoughts: This book is something special. Not one character is in the right. There are no good women or men in this cutthroat world. Lada, Radu, and Mehmed become even more ruthless than I ever imagined. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT.

Book Review Time: My Lady Jane | Cynthia Hand

Highlights

1)  I’ve found a job as a Starbucks barista and cashier at Target! And I may also have a job at Regal Theaters and an editorial internship at Red Hen Press in Los Angeles!

2)  I finally requested my first few ARCs on Netgalley and have gotten approved for three, so far!

3)  I attended Anime Expo with my friends and it was SOMETHING. I’ll do a post on this later.

4)  I’m still listening to my first audiobook but now I’m 100% sure I love audiobooks.

5)  I managed to pull back on my book spending and only bought three books this month: This Savage Song, I’ll Give You the Sun, and Daughter of the Burning City!

Final Thoughts (2)I think I’m going to keep avoiding a set TBR. I’m really enjoying not having to force myself to read a book I’m not in the mood for.

Currently Reading-2

It’s taking me some time, but I’m still working through the audiobook version of The Red Sister. I’ve also begun reading my first ARC, Starswept by Mary Fan (I’m only a few chapters in and I think it’s FANTASTIC) and Daughter of the Burning City by Amanda Foody!

My focus this month, however, will be on catching up on all my reviews, so don’t be surprised when the majority of my posts are book reviews haha. Be on the lookout for them. And I also have a midyear’s resolution:

I will allow myself only two days before I must write a review.

If I manage that, I won’t fall too far behind on my reviews anymore!!

All right, that’s all for now! Thanks for sticking around. Hope to hear your guys’ thoughts on any of these books 😀

See ya soon! ❤

    1. Thank you so much! I’m really excited to have finally found something 😀 And I thought WDMR was really cute. In my opinion, it had a couple of drawbacks, but not too many. I encourage you not to go in with too high expectations, just in case. I really hope you end up loving it!

  1. Seems like July was a great month for you Azia, congratulations on your jobs and your internship. That’s great news and hopefully you’ll still have enough time for blogging as well. 🙂
You got through some great books too Now I Rise is brilliant and I completely get what you mean about needing to know what happens next. I need the third book in the series!
I really hope you enjoy Daughter of the Burning City, I’ve already read and really enjoyed that book so I’ll be interested in seeing what you think of that one, and good luck with your resolution to only wait two days before reviewing books. Hopefully it does stop you getting too far behind in the future. 🙂 ❤

    1. Thanks so much! I’m really happy to have snagged that internship. It’s so hard to find a place in the publishing industry on the west coast. And it’s weird. I actually blog better when I have work to do haha. So hopefully I’ll be much better about blog hopping in the coming weeks 😀
Now I Rise was amazing. One of the best books I’ve read this year. And I’m really excited to read DOTBC, but gotta finish Starswept first so I can review it before it’s archived LOL. On a deadline now XD At least I’ll start off well with my resolution b/c the moment I finish the book, I have to write the review haha ❤

      1. That’s all right. 🙂 Oh that’s great to hear then, you must be kind of relieved you have the internship considering how hard they are to find.
I think it’s the same for me when it comes to Now I Rise, can’t wait for the third one, and I hope you love DOTBC as well. Glad to hear your resolutions are starting well too. 🙂 ❤

      2. Very relieved. Now I’m planning on working two jobs to cover the transportation costs. But at least they’re both at Starbucks!
Fallen a little behind already, but I plan to do some catch up these next few days! Schedule is already getting pretty hectic 🙂

    1. I really did, thank you! 😀 And I really liked Cold Summer despite its issues. I’ll actually have a review posted for it sometime this week or the next! Hope you like it once you get around to it 😀
